You may want to do anything you can to keep a senior entertained. However, letting them sit on the couch for several hours a day in front of a TV could be one of the worst things that you could do. There are some dangers you should be aware of.
New research has shown that seniors who live a sedentary lifestyle and who spend most of their days sitting on the couch watching TV are more prone to walking disabilities. This could mean anything from trouble walking to being able to keep a decent pace of two miles per hour or more.
If you have already seen a loved one struggling to walk after spending a few hours on the couch, it's important that you do something about it. Get them more active by inviting them for a walk around the block. You might also want to consider a personal trainer to come out to the house to work with them on some exercises. If you have a pool or there is a pool in the community, it might also be advantageous to have them do some aquatic exercise as it's good on the joints.
Too much couch time with the TV on can also increase the risk of dementia or memory loss. Your loved one's mind isn't getting any kind of workout when they're watching TV shows. You need to keep them better engaged. This can be done with board games, conversations, and even video games. Think of ways to keep them active. If you don't have the time to do it, consider placing them in an adult daycare where they can receive stimulation throughout the day.
